Advising

A student can declare their major by filling out the major declaration form, located on the Registrar's website, or in the undergraduate office (PUP 252) and return it to the Registrar's office. Once the student has declared a Sociology or Anthropology major, they will be assigned to a faculty advisor, and will receive updates relevant to the major.

Students must meet with their advisor each semester during advanced registration (October/November and March/April) to review their progress toward fulfilling major and university requirements. Students will not be able to register for classes until they have met with an advisor and he/she has authorized the student to register. SOCY or ANTH majors with another primary major are still strongly encouraged to meet each semester with their SOCY or ANTH advisor.

Students' advisor assignments will be posted each semester on the bulletin board next to PUP 256. Students will receive important communication from the department and the university regarding advising each semester. It is important to read such correspondence, as it contains important instructions which directly impacts students' ability to register for classes.

It is the student's responsibility to schedule a meeting with their assigned advisor during the advanced registration period (October/November and March/April), by signing up for an appointment through Signupgenius or contacting them directly through phone or email. Students may also set up meetings with their advisor throughout the semester to discuss their academic plan, or to ask questions. To determine who their advisor is, to switch advisors, or for the answer to any other questions, please contact Elise Bruner in the departmental office at 410.455.3979 or elise3@umbc.edu.
